Federal authorities have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
- Legal counsel for the challengers is being handled by a prominent law firm
- The firm's founder currently serves as assistant attorney general
- Nevertheless, this attorney has been removed from the current litigation
