The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
