A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
