England along with Wales Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
