Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
