Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
