An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.

Can you recall the Kindest Gesture a Someone You Didn't Know Has Shown for You?

Whether it's cheering you up to altering your path, we would love to know random meetings that have left a lasting impression.

We invite you to tell us if you are 18 or over, without revealing your identity if you wish. What you share are secure, and are intended for the goal of sharing inspiring stories.
